‘n we thought the FEEDBACK video was bad?

Witness another career malfunction from the late great Janet Jackson.  I’m a Janet fan but this was sad to look at … ROFL

  1. Ok, so I’m jumping to this one so that I don’t keep posting back down on the other one. I downloaded the album on Wednesday, only to receive it by mail yesteday. So I’ve listened to it twice, although I haven’t given it my undivided attention yet.

Second glance: Now I find myself liking Feedback after listening to it a few times, and I hate myself for it. I do have to say, when you said it was Damita Jo 2.0, I disagree a bit. To me, 20 Y.O. was an improvement over the unlistenable (is that even a word? if not, I’m making it one) Damita Jo. Not great, maybe not even good (can’t stand her song with Nelly), but an improvement. I do love the first 6 songs of it, that’s what I listen to on the way to work and back sometimes, and then I stop it. But as a whole, meh… but not as bad as Damita Jo.

I find Discipline a definite improvement over 20 Y.O., meaning it’s much better than Damita Jo. At least this one feels a bit cohesive, whereas Damita Jo was basically “shit from the bottom of my music drawer that never saw the light of day basically because Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam said it was shit” all thrown together for the sake of putting out a mediocre album.

The interludes… I do agree that they’re disruptive when you’re shuffling through your ipod (you can always say skip when shuffling, but who has the time to do that?). But I cut her some slack, because the interludes are kind of her thing, since Rhythm Nation. The songs, there’s a few that I can see making their way to the radio, and I already envision videos for several of them.

Is it innovative? No. Is it compelling? Not really. Is it sexually charged? Madonna’s Erotica was sexually charged, this is more like reading a Playboy (or Playgirl) after cutting all the juicy pics out. It’s a bit catchy, and again, a definite improvement over the previous two. But it’s VERY FAR from janet dot, velvet rope, and rhythm nation. Oh well. Is it a comeback? No. But I must say, I don’t hate it. So she must’ve done something right.

As for the video, I can’t see what you posted (streaming media is blocked at work) but I got to watch the video for Feedback” last night. I almost needed a barf bag. And I’m a hardcore fan. But… I mean, the special effects were like early 80’s, it was like watching the original Superman movie with glittered foam rocks. The planet thing could’ve been done so much better with CGI, kind of a salute to the Silver Surfer in a way. But no… let’s use cheap ginormous balls covered in dust. The dust was probably already there from lack of use. The outfit? Nothing to talk about. Lame, unimpressive, unoriginal. Where the half-bra half-jacket from “All For You” made me cringe, but at the same time made me think, “hey that’s original, fuggly, but original,” these bodysuits were lackluster. I mean, was that even lycra? It looked like cheap cotton-knit. Her weave was cute, but during the dance scene it kept getting into her face. Not cute. And what was up with the milk?

I have to say, I liked Paula Abdul’s new video much better. And I still don’t like the song. But at least the video was current. Janet’s was more akin to Rebbie’s “Centipede”. Gag.

  2. I love reading ur take on things … U are so much more eloquent with ur critiques. Why didn’t I think of “fuggly”? LOL

It sounds to me like U were mildly impressed with this cd although I think we differ on the ranking. I agree Damita Jo was the bottom of the barrel. I found myself thinking of Damita Jo when I listened to this cd – almost as if DISCIPLINE was a second attempt to try and make her hip and relevant to the Jermaine Dupree posse. For that reason I thought of this as a Damita Jo 2.0. I dunno what this will say about my taste in music but I actually found a few more bright spots in 20 YO than I do in DISCIPLINE. As I mentioned, I didnt find it as cohesive – bouncing around in the beginning, flat in places, and grossly overprocessed especially when things slowed down. I will admit Feedback is catchy but I can’t say I like it, and the video was a letdown. Rock With U caught my ear and had great potential until the vocals came in and seemed to drag on the momentum. I find myself getting drawn into Greatest X but I think that might jus be me thinking too much about me. I enjoyed 20 YO more than this but I gotta admit I havent bought a Janet cd since Damita Jo.

Thanx again for the comments … :)

  3. Ok, so now I finally got to see the video. I saw the performance on the Ellen show, which was more clear because there was no audience close to her. Same choreography, same half planet ball. The outfit in Ellen was better, but similar (white shirt, black bustier on top, parachute pants, commando books). The choreography seems like a more spastic version of the African themed “Together Again”, with more floor sequences and a lot more crotch grabbing. But it felt like the same choreographer.

And as I said before, the more I hear this song, the more I like it. I guess it’s maybe because now I’m not paying attention to the lyrics and I’m just listening to the groove. Except the “I’m heavy like a first day period”. That’s just vile and disgusting. Seriously, stop talking about your vagina.

  4. This song should’ve been called “Refried”.

    Bring it up
give it to me, come on
    Bring it up
give it to me, come on
my beans are refried, refried (oh)
    refried, refried (oh)…

  5. The hair, the hair, the hair… WTF??? :)
I like Janet, but this isn’t of her best offerings. When you already have a really thin voice, don’t do songs that only highlight that fact. Even Madonna has learned that lesson.
